In The Beginning ...
United Mailing Service (UMS) began it's existence on August 1, 1984 under the leadership of Frank W. Hovis. The plant was located on Carpet St. in the Westinghouse Blvd. area. Initially there were just eight employees. Equipment was limited, with just two Kirk-Rudy labeling machines, one inserter and one postage meter. With all the start-up problems of a small business, growth was slow. However, due to the hard work and dedication of the entire staff, UMS began to make headway.
A Step In The Right Direction ...
In 1988, UMS was able to move to improved facilities on Michael Wyle Drive in the Pressley Park area. Over a period of time, additional Kirk-Rudy's and inserters were added as well as other peripheral equipment. A steady increase in growth was enjoyed. In 1996, UMS named Robert G. (Bob) Smith as President and J. Edward (Ed) Stirewalt as Vice-President, about that time, computer technology began to have a significant influence on the mailing industry. UMS joined this trend, first by outsourcing computer operations and, when justified, installing and developing its own computer department. Growth continued to be spurred by this development and new equipment such as laser printers were added. Facilities were becoming overtaxed.
A Major Move ...
In 1997, after overseeing it's construction, UMS moved to its present facility on Taggart Creek Road off the Billy Graham Parkway near the airport. The location is also very convenient to the post office sectional center. Computer technology became an even bigger part of the mailing business and continued to affect the growth of UMS. Inkjet addressing was added, laser printing was expanded. The company continued to grow in sales, production capabilities, and size of staff. Expansion occurred in computer services (such as list enhancement, postage discounts, and improved delivery), address labeling, folding, inserting, tabbing, inkjet addressing, laser letters and documents. Many improvements have also been made in customer services and relationships.
The Best Is Yet To Come ...
UMS is presently led by Jim Heintz, President; Mark Ingram, Executive Vice-President; Debbie Smith, Vice President of Finance. Occupying 40,000 square feet of space, employing over 40 people, maintaining a sales level of more than seven times its first year of operation, UMS prides itself on the fact that it has always created and enjoyed the utmost respect from its customers, employees, competitors, and associates. As growth continues, so too will the dedication of United Mailing Service to merit that respect.
